The other day a flier came through the door from our local theatre, the
Belgrade, advertising a play called Birdsong, playing this week. Since hubby had read the book, he was really keen to go, and I'm always up for a trip to the theatre. Anyway, he booked the tickets for lastnight.

It was a mad rush to get home from work and get ready, I decided to wear this gorgeous vintage black velvet dress that Mum had bought me for Christmas, as well as a rather dandy turban to keep my bonce toasty.

Hubby got into the spirit too, donning his favourite vintage suit and rather dapper hat. We've decided that we are both very guilty of leaving our best clothes to languish in our wardrobes, rather than seizing opportunities like this to glam up.

Anyway, for those of you who aren't familiar with the story of Birdsong, it's set in the 1st world war, and specifically concentrates around the battle of the Somme. It focusses on the lives of several soldiers, all from different backgrounds, who are all thrown together in this most horrible situation. Running in tandem with this is the developing love story of one of the soldiers, told through a series of flashbacks. It's a beautiful but highly emotional story, which means for someone like me, there were most definitely tears. The Belgrade brought a great show to the city this time though, with well known actors such as Sarah Jayne Dunn (Hollyoaks), Charlie G Hawkins (Eastenders) and Arthur Bostrom (Allo, Allo), and all of the actors delivered really fantastic performances. Both me and hubby really enjoyed the show.

Once it was over, we headed across the way for a late meal in Bella Italia. It was impromptu, but we were both hungry. We virtually had the restaurant to ourselves, devouring delicious pizza while I took some pictures of hubby looking like the Godfather. In hindsight, pizza at 11pm isn't a great idea, but it was a lovely end to a fabulous evening, and a well overdue date night.

Birdsong's one of my favourite ever books, I think I'd be far too much of an emotional wreck after watching the stage version to face pizza! x
